Dear You, 

I don’t believe you’ll ever get the chance to read this, or if you do you wouldn’t know who it was for- precisely because I never gathered the courage to tell you I loved you. 

We were sailboats with adventures we had yet to go on, you and I. A little too hopeful maybe, about the places we’d see, the food we’d try, the people in our lives we’d meet, the photos we’d take together. However there is only so much hoping one can do until the apparent lack of adventure makes you finally set sail- in opposite directions.

I wish I could tell you about the seas I endured on that first voyage alone- how rough they were, how I thought the rain would never stop pouring. Then out of the sky came the bright sun and a friendly shielding cloud: this sailboat’s new lovers, other pirates seemed to claim. It was to a certain extent true- one became my refuge and the other, my escape, and it was their love and my love for them that saved me. But they were not you.
